Planned Giving
Remembering Mia in your estate plans is an important and impactful way to help sustain and strengthen the museum for the next 100 years. We accept a variety of planned gifts, from bequests and beneficiary designations on retirement accounts and life insurance to charitable gift annuities and charitable trusts. Estate gifts can support the museum’s general operations, establish endowment funds, or be restricted to specific areas—subject to discussion with Mia staff.
Estate Gift Options
Bequest in Will or Trust
Making a bequest via your will or living trust is a simple way to leave a personal legacy that supports Mia. You can use the following language as an example:
I give and devise to the Minneapolis Society of Fine Arts, d/b/a the Minneapolis Institute of Art, a nonprofit corporation in the State of Minnesota located at 2400 Third Avenue South, Minneapolis, Minnesota, 55404…
Then state the amount to the museum as a percentage, a specific amount, or the residue (remainder) of the estate.
Beneficiary Designations
Mia can be named as a primary or contingent beneficiary on:
- Retirement accounts: IRAs, 401(k)s, 403(b)s, etc. Unlike your heirs, Mia isn’t required to pay income taxes on the amount received.
- Securities: stocks, bonds, and mutual funds
- Bank accounts: savings, checking, money market, and certificates of deposit
- Insurance policies: either as a beneficiary or owner
- Donor advised funds
Life Income Gifts
Charitable remainder trusts and charitable gift annuities are great ways to make a gift to Mia while receiving an income stream during your lifetime. Plus you’ll qualify for an immediate tax deduction. This can be an excellent option to consider if you have highly appreciated assets, stock, or required minimum distributions from your IRA. You can also use cash to create these gifts.
New Century Society
All donors who include Mia in their estate plans become members of our New Century Society. New Century Society members’ thoughtful planning and generosity keep Mia free and accessible to all and ensure that our outstanding programs thrive and our world-class treasures remain on view in our galleries for generations to come. Members are invited to Mia’s annual legacy luncheon, exhibition openings, and curatorial tours, and receive recognition on the museum’s donor wall.
Join Mia’s New Century Society by completing the Confidential Letter of Intent. Special thanks to our New Century Society members, who are some of our most dedicated friends!
Other Ways to Give
Mia accepts gifts from donor advised funds, securities (stocks, bonds, or mutual funds), qualified charitable distributions from IRAs, and funds via wire or ACH transfer. You can donate gifts of art in consultation with our curators and in accordance with our Collection Plan.
